The military conflict in Ukraine has forced millions of people to flee violence and instability. Among them are women who, in addition to the challenges of migration, also face increased risks of violence, including domestic violence, sexual abuse and exploitation.
Ilona, a 32-year-old woman from Kharkiv, fled Ukraine with her two children, aged 5 and 8, following the bombing of her city. Maria witnessed the destruction of her home and the violence around her, experiences that left her deeply traumatized.
After a long and dangerous journey, Ilona arrived in Moldova, where she was welcomed into a refugee center. Here, she began to adapt to her new reality, but encountered difficulties, including language barriers and a lack of financial resources.
Following an information session on GBV, organized by the Safe Space Artemida mobile team, supported by UNFPA Moldova, Ilona requested individual counseling in which she shared her tragic experience of being subjected to violent acts by her husband.
At first, her marriage seemed happy, but as the conflict escalated, tensions within the family intensified. Her husband, affected by the stress of the war and the losses he had suffered, began to become violent, both verbally and physically. Ilona tried to find help, but in her community, the stigma associated with domestic violence and the fear of reprisals made her feel isolated. When the situation became unbearable, Ilona was forced to make the decision to leave her husband and flee Ukraine.
She faced difficulties, but thanks to non-governmental organizations and the UNFPA #SafeSpace mobile team, she received support and psychological assistance.
Over time, Ilona realized that violence was not acceptable and that she deserved a better life for herself and her child. Although the road to recovery is long and complicated, she began participating in integration programs, where she learned the language of the host country and began to build a new life, hoping to eventually find peace and stability.
Ilona’s story is just one of many that illustrates the courage and resilience of women who face violence during conflicts.
It is important to provide adequate support and raise awareness of the problems these victims face, in order to help them rebuild their lives.
