From fear to hope: the story of Olga and her son in Moldova 💙🇲🇩
👩🦳Olga, mother of a 9-year-old boy👨🦰, arrived in the Republic of Moldova after fleeing the war. The beginning was full of difficulties in a foreign country: from not knowing the Romanian language and lack of money, to the constant fear for her son’s future.
The boy, traumatized by the war, closed himself in on himself, becoming very shy. He refused to speak and did not accept the presence of other adults. Olga tried to start a new life on her own, but could not cope with the expenses. After 3 months of struggle, she understood that she needed help.
Olga participated in an information session of the Mobile Team🚍 – Safe Space for Women and Girls. Women and Girls Safe Space. She was counseled by specialists and redirected to the necessary services in the community for support.
The biggest challenge was school👩🏫. For several months, it was difficult for her to decide whether to enroll him. The boy even refused online classes, fearing the unknown language and rejection from other students.
Olga turned to a child psychologist👨💻, and within 6 months, the situation began to change. When he finally went to school, it was not easy. There were moments of discrimination and isolation from some classmates. Olga was worried and even thought about quitting.
That’s when we intervened! We talked to the class teacher, and through joint activities and encouraging dialogue, things quickly improved. The classmates received him better, and the boy overcame his fear and gradually integrated, feeling part of a group again.
Today, Olga says that the decision to bring her child to school was one of the best! The support they received from the community and the team gave them courage and confidence in their future.
A safe haven is possible. We thank our partners UNFPA Moldova for helping us build this #SafeSpace for mothers like Olga.
🟠We are convinced that only together, through joint, consolidated efforts, can we face the challenges.
